An Addict's Thoughts

I am an addict. I am addicted to cocaine. I will go to Cocaine Anonymous, practice the steps, and avoid situations where I am exposed to the substance or to people who use it. I will avoid all high risk situations and I will recover. I will not use the rest of my life.

I am an addict. I am addicted to alcohol. I will go to Alcoholic's Anonymous, practice the steps, avoid situations where I am exposed to alcoholic beverages or to people who are using them. I will avoid all high risk situations and I will recover. I will be free from alcohol for the rest of my life.

I am an addict. I am addicted to FOOD. I will avoid situations where I am exposed to food or to people who are using it. I will avoid all high risk situations were I am exposed to FOOD and I will recover. I will be free from FOOD for the rest of my life. OH WAIT! I can't do this. I will always be exposed to food and to those who use it. If I am FOOD - Free for the rest of my life, I will die from starvation! Have you ever thought about this? Addicts declare they have it worse than anyone, that being in recovery is a life long process that they have to work on day-to-day. This is true, but try being addicted to FOOD for a change. This is one substance you CANNOT do without, nor can you AVOID it! The worst addiction there is.

  1. Yes, but when I am Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired I can HALT and avoid my triggers. I can keep good healthy foods in my purse so when I feel hunger coming on I can eat them instead. (a handful of walnuts or almonds). When we with hold food as a punishment we only harm ourselves more. We can learn how to take better care of ourselves and eat better foods. I love the Dr. Oz book, You on a Diet. It is how NOT to diet, but rather to reprogram our bodies to eat healthier. The book teaches about everything that happens to food in our bodies and why we crave certain foods. Sugar activates the same reward/pleasure center in our brains as Cocaine. No wonder it is to powerful for most of us to say no to. Seriously, read the Dr. Oz book.

  2. Yes HALT works unless of course you find yourself ALWAYS hungry, angry, lonely, or tired. :)
